Downtown Kirkland is a perfect-sized collection of restaurants, shops, nightclubs and art galleries tucked between parks and the lakefront and dotted through with captivating sculptures. Sailing clubs and Argosy cruises use Kirkland’s downtown marina and public dock as their base for trips through Lake Washington. Many community events are held at Marina Park’s Lakeshore Plaza; including the popular Kirkland Uncorked annual summer food and wine festival.
Peter Kirk Park provides baseball fields, a skate park, an outdoor swimming pool, library, senior center and a performance theatre right in the heart of downtown. Additional shopping and a movie theatre is located just on the other side of the park at Parkplace Center.
Beautiful lakeside condos, apartments, and estates line the 2 miles of shoreline and bluffs from downtown to the prestigious Carillon Point Center offering fine dining options, office space, a marina, and the Woodmark luxury hotel, spa and yacht club.
The bulk of Kirkland’s office parks, shopping and services are positioned on either side of I-405 at the Totem Lake exit in north Kirkland. Residents of the Totem Lake neighborhood take an active role in the commercial, recreational, and residential development of the area. Condos and townhomes are plentiful and a few sections of single family homes are also in the area, with more of everything added each year.
Juanita Beach Park draws visitors from both sides of the lake. It has been a favorite since 1920 when first concession stand was put up on the newly exposed sandy beach. Cafe Juanita at the northeast corner of the park has only been around since 2000 but is already garnering rave reviews from diners and critics alike for its outstanding Northern Italian fare and impeccable service.
Bridle Trails State Park is another of Kirkland’s historic parks. As the name suggests, it is horses, not beaches that draw visitors to this facility. The park offers 28 miles of hiking and riding trails and hosts numerous equestrian riding and show events. Homes in the surrounding neighborhoods range from modest ranch houses to fabulously grand estates.
The entire city of Kirkland falls in the highly regarded Lake Washington School District. Kirkland’s International Community School is consistently ranked as one of the top public high schools in the nation.
With its wonderful schools, parks, and beaches combined with fine arts, shopping, and dining, Kirkland is beloved by residents of all ages.
