The Admiral District is the oldest neighborhood in West Seattle. In the early 1900s it was connected to Seattle by ferries and a cable car. It is the location of West Seattle High School . The Admiral neighborhood is perched at the northern part of the West Seattle peninsula above Alki Beach, giving many of the homes commanding views of downtown Seattle or the Puget Sound.
Admiral Junction (corner of California Avenue S.W. and S.W. Admiral Way) is the heart of a bustling commercial district with lots of shopping, restaurants, and even a movie theater. Homes are mostly older with quality construction and higher values than most of the West Seattle area.
Many people who live in West Seattle commute to downtown Seattle using the West Seattle Bridge. This can get pretty congested during busy times, especially during those days that have sports events downtown. But West Seattle, especially the Admiral District, is still a lot closer to downtown than many other suburbs, like Renton or Everett. And many people feel like they have “escaped the hustle and bustle” of the city once they cross the bridge.
